Security Roller Shutters That Are Acceptable

According to a report from Pendle Council’s Nelson Committee, on Monday, a planning officer has indicated that roller shutters on windows in shop units undergoing renovation in the town center would generate a “fortress like” effect. This is in respect to the new project laid down by Mayan Partnership to work on a large-scale refurbishment of the previous Burtons/Woolworths unit in Leeds Road and Scotland road. The organization has applied to fix replacement shop fronts, as well as slotted roller security shutters in the town center area.

Alex Cameron, the planning officer is in agreement with the replacement of shop fronts, as long as proper matching stone would be used in fresh pillars. The only idea he disagrees with are the kinds of shutters proposed to be used in the project. He says he has a couple of issues with the shutters and that they should not be installed as projected. The various reasons that heighten his disagreement during the meeting are among the following:

He says that the projected security shutters would, when bunged, have unattractive and stark appearance that would eventually create a fortress like outcome in the street view in this area of town.

He says that those shutters planned to be on the renovated building on Leeds road would particularly be visually inappropriate since they would project much higher on the building, further above the fascia on the way in.

He further adds that usually, outdoor security shutters are not acceptable in Conservation Areas in town. Where no alternatives outdoor security shutters are available for use, lattice shutter types are encouraged. This is for the benefit of this part of town.

Last but not least, the planning officer was against the security shutters because the proposed shutters have no specific justification and for this reason, they would negatively impact the appearance and character of Whitefield Conservation Area including the visual amenity of this particular area of Nelson town center.

With all the above issues raised at the meeting, the committee’s decision would be to re-convene their conference to address the issues comprehensively to find the best solution to this. The meeting would also consult with the planning officer to get his views on how the security shutters would be installed without causing so much trouble. All this and much more would be documented and later presented to the chair who would in turn consult with the organization for further consultation.
