Bridge Nursery News
November/December 2006

Back in January this year, Darren, “Our man with the digger”, spent 5 very constructive days in the sales area. He first dug a deep trench along the centre pathway, and then laid in a land drain surrounded with gravel. In addition some 70 tons of stone were laid and leveled to raise the sales area above the surrounding ground level. Philip then manfully wielded a horrible vibrating roller to compact it all.

We then had to put all the sales beds back – this however gave us the opportunity to squeeze in some extra beds to accommodate our ever-increasing stock. The beds were re-filled with pea gravel and all the plants put back!

Finally Philip distributed 5 tons of granite chippings onto the paths to finish
the whole thing off.

This may have been a daunting task, but now every time it rains heavily, the excess water drains away and our customers can now choose their plants AND keep their shoes clean. If you haven’t yet seen our new smart sales area, please come – even if it has rained recently!

Two other major changes happened this year:

For the first time, we now carry a selection of Bedding Plants for sale.

We’d humm’d and haa’d about opening times ever since we started way back in ’98. To avoid confusion we are now open Every Day from 10.00am to 4.00pm.
The nursery will, however, be closed (except by appointment) from Mid-December to 1st February to give us a bit of a break!

This year has given some difficult weather: too cold and grey in the spring, too hot in July, too wet in October and November. In spite of such inhospitable growing conditions, plants in the garden have thrived. Both the Tulip Tree and Phormium Tenax flowered for the first time in their lives. We had an abundance of non-human visitors – bees, butterflies, hoverflies, dragon flies, the odd snake, plenty of birds and unexpected (and very unwelcome!) escaped cattle.
